CMS’ January 2023 Stakeholder Call

On January 24, 2023, CMS conducted its quarterly stakeholder call and reviewed 2022 successes and provided a high-level overview of their 2023 plans and initiatives. CMS Strategic Pillars (see infographic above) were highlighted by each CMS leader who discussed their area of responsibility. Below are some areas that CMS will focus on for 2023 as well as a link to their strategic plan:
- Continued focus on Medicare Advantage & Value-Based Care
- Five health equity priorities for CMS: 1) standardized data 2) assessing causes of disparities 3) building the capacity of healthcare organizations and workforce 4) advancing language access 5) and increasing all forms of accessibility to healthcare services.
- Test new MSSP models to incorporate primary care providers and specialists in ACOs, potentially focusing on underserved populations with additional safety net providers
- Address ACO quality reporting barriers
- Access to quality care through new ACO models
- Improve care for the lives of people served, in particular clinicians (e.g., three proposed rules – interoperability, electronic adoption, and prior authorization)
- No Surprises Act, whose intent is to ensure that patients do not receive “surprise bills” especially when dealing with an acute healthcare situation
- Integrating policy, operations, and communications to provide better customer experience
- Future CMS contracts will focus on three areas
- Fiscal stewardship – lower cost with better value
- Moving claims processing into the cloud (safer, secure, and lower cost to maintain)
- CMS will be stressing the need to keep systems and data secure “to honor privacy for our CMS consumers”
- Priority attention will be on:
- Nursing homes and oversight
- Medicaid-managed care
