DOJ Reaches $22.7 Million Settlement with Providence Over Medically Unnecessary Neurosurgery Procedures

The Department of Justice had a $22.7 million settle with Providence Health & Services Washington (Providence) to resolve allegations that Providence inappropriately billed claims to federal programs (Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, etc.) for services that were not medically necessary.  Providence admitted that the concerns for these fraudulently billed services, which also put patients’ live and safety at serious risk, were brought to their attention several times.  This was a case initiated by a whistle blower (qui tam case), who will receive over $4 million for bringing this case to light.
